About The CEO

As an undergrad student in the late 90’s at North Carolina A&T State University, Tanya got her first glimpse into the entertainment world when she connected with executives of the newly formed, Hidden Beach Recordings. By assisting with street team promotions for Jill Scott and Mike Phillips, she learned just what it meant to grind hard to see your dreams come to fruition. The fast pace and ever changing climate of the entertainment industry gave her a rush that she had not experienced before. She was sure that this was a world that she could thrive in. Upon graduating with a dual degree in Public Relations & Print Journalism, she continued her studies at the University of Georgia. Tanya obtained her Master’s Degree in Mass Communication with a concentration in Public Relations. Although her love for the industry was still strong, she entered into the corporate world instead.

It wouldn’t take long for her love of music to draw her back in. What began as an innocent night out with friends in October of 2002 attending an album release concert for Freestyle Nation led by PJ Morton ended up changing her life forever. Tanya LOVED the show, but was later turned off by her experience at the merchandise table. Unexpectedly, the following day she had the opportunity to meet PJ and being the outspoken fire cracker she was, she took that moment to share what had transpired the night before. Being more of a problem solver than a complainer, she ended the conversation with suggestions for enhancing the merch experience for future shows. She was invited to his next show to help his ’team’ set up, but to her surprise, when she arrived … there was no team.

Still working full time for an events and marketing company, she began moonlighting as PJ’s merch coordinator. As their friendship grew and trust levels increased, PJ began to call on her for other assistance. Over time, her role evolved into being his personal assistant and eventually working as his manager. Soon, her passion for her ’side hustle’ overtook her corporate ambitions. Stepping out on faith, she launched her own company, The Master Plan which eventually she renamed the TJ Entertainment Group.

Tanya launched her business late 2003 and by early 2005, she turned in her resignation letter and never thought about Corporate America again. She branched out and began working with other clients in addition to PJ and over time, added clientele outside of just the music world.

In addition to TJ Entertainment Group, she is the founder of a nonprofit, KJ’s Hope Foundation (www.kjshope.org) which educates, encourages and empowers individuals living with sickle cell anemia. All of her philanthropic work falls under her nonprofit, the Tanya S James Foundation (www.thetsjfoundation.org). She is also the CEO of a new online apparel company called 2.22 Designs. She is a devoted wife, committed mother and active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Recording Academy. In her free time, she loves to read, spend time with friends and family and travel the world. In 2023, Tanya was inducted into Who’s Who of Black Charlotte.
